Summer Sampler // Week 3
Hi friends, I am a wee bit tardy to the party but I hope to catch up this week and stay on track with the rest of the group!
This week's block is mine! It was moved up a bit so we could give you guys an easier curved block to practice with if some of you are new to curved piecing. The snow cone block is a block I created that makes me think about my favorite part of summertime - snow cones! Some of you in other countries may not be familiar with snow cones, like we are in the states, so this one could be mocked up as an ice cream cone as well.
Since I am running a bit behind - thank you never ending sickness - I finally chose some solids in a fun summer rainbow palette and went to work.
Truth be told....I will probably go back as we work through the blocks and make different versions, I am a glutton for punishment and will always think another color combo would look better. So this quilt might end up being HUGE!
This block not only introduces curves to the quilt, I also included templates that you print out. The trick to templates is to double check the 1" block in the corner to make sure that your template actually prints out in the correct size. There were several of you that had a slightly smaller template making the middle block smaller than needed, but this pattern is super forgiving and the border can be enlarged or additional borders can be added for extra fun!
For the test block (I made so many) I decided to use a fun Uppercase print and a bright white for the snow cone paper cone.
Curved blocks are a little tricky but once you give them a try you might actually love them! Here is a great curved block tutorial video by Angela Pingel to help you out as you master the curve.
I like to insert a straight pin in the middle, then on each side lining up the flat edges with each other. Slowly work your way around the curve to the other side.
The rest of the cone is also template based. This is an easy one to cut out and sew together quickly.
Sew the two halves of the snow cone together and add your border! This is where you can add some extra flair if you like.
For those of you that are a part of the group - I have really enjoyed seeing all of the fun snow cones you have all been making!
It's not too late to sign up and join in on the fun too -
