Timber Quilt Along // Week 1

Hello friends and welcome to the first week of our Timber Quilt Along! We decided to add an additional week to the schedule to allow for planning & fabric selection since the quilt is so versatile on how many fabrics may be used. Be sure to print out the PDF so you can color along with us this week as we plan out our quilts.

You can make this using solids, as seen in the pattern cover shot or have fun with the colorful bundle Alison has put together using the fabrics I am using (warning it is super bright and super awesome). If your budget is tight make it a scrappy quilt, using pieces from your scrap collection with a neutral solid as the background. There are so many ways to make this your own, and I for one cannot wait to see what you all create!

Timber Pattern

I planned out my color selection this last week using a rainbow assortment of the new Sunprint 2015 collection by Alison Glass paired with a black chambray from Andover Fabrics. I love the southwest feel of this pattern and thought a gradual rainbow effect would be kind of fun - and I have been dying to sew up something with these fabrics so it was a win win.

Coloring to the best of my ability with my sons markers (what was left and not lost or dried out) I went to work on my color sheet. Since I do not have a black chambray colored marker - I chose the black so some of my images might be a little jarring but I think once sewn together these combos will be beautiful.

The one thing that helped me out greatly was taking little snippets from the fabrics I chose and numbered them with a sharpie - then as I colored my sheet I numbered those places. This will help out when I start to sew, making it easier not to get like colored fabrics confused.

This is what I have come up with for my plan - a gradual rainbow effect keeping the colors in order. I just love to make quilts with vibrant fabrics and am looking forward to seeing how this one turns out.

I might make some slight modifications as I go, by adding black chambray in some spots where there might be too much going on.

Be sure to share your color sheets and fabric choices with the group on Instagram this week using the hashtag #timberqal - and if you are not on Instagram leave a comment below on our weekly posts with progress link from your blog. Many of you are not on Instagram or keep up with a blog - have no fear! Email me an image of your progress to my email address nicole@modernhandcraft.com with the subject: Timber Quilt Along and I will make sure to share your progress with the rest of the group. We want to make sure everyone is included!

Thanks for stopping by today friends and I cant wait to see what you create!
