Selfish Sewing Week // The Lucy Hobo
Hi friends! When Rachael from Imagine Gnats contacted me about Selfish Sewing Week I was super pumped. I watched last year as so many amazing things were created and loved the idea of taking a week off to make something just for you. This year I had the chance to choose a fun pattern and since we were being "selfish" I really wanted to create a fun fall bag to use at Quilt Market this year. So....Clover and Violet had the perfect bag - the granny square pattern initially drew me in, then I loved the size since it resembles most bags I currently use. I present to you the Lucy Hobo bag - how cute is this? I love that the Clover and Violet website says they make Bag Patterns for Quilters - yes!
For my fabrics I went back and forth with several and I mean several combos, finally choosing some fun wool fabrics that my friend Alison sent and my favorite staple, Black Essex Linen.
- Robert Kaufman Black Essex linen
- Alison Glass wool fabric by Weeks Dye Works
- Alison Glass Handcrafted fabric - Petal in Eggplant for bag lining
- Therm O Web Fusible Fleece
- Clover and Violet Lucy Hobo Bag pattern
Since I had more colors than the pattern calls for and I didn't have quite enough material to make the bag as written, I chose to change up the pattern just a wee bit. Instead of doing the granny square pattern on the outside I cut up the squares and did a row by row pattern with the wool.
It is not the granny square pattern I initially loved on this bag, but I love the way it turned out. The only changes I made to the bag were omitting the outside side pocket, the button closure at the opening and left out the inside pockets. I am not a huge pocket user...I guess I love the chaos an open bag creates :). I also increased the strap from 23" to 40" because I like to have a bag that I can sling over my body.
For those of you interested in trying out this pattern, it is well written, easy to understand and great for the "new" bag maker! Be sure to stop by Clover and Violet's shop because there are many many more fun patterns to choose from! Also coming soon is this fantastic wool fabric by Alison Glass and Weeks Dye Works. It is dyed to match several of her fabric lines, and that can only mean bright vibrant colors! I just love how the wool and linen give this bag a cozy fall feeling - and I know that I will be using it all season long.
Thanks for stopping by friends!
