links21.jpg

Hi Friends and welcome to my stop on the Ho, Ho, Ho and On We Sew Link Up Party!

I am so excited to begin my Christmas sewing - Wait isn't it a little early Nicole??! If you think about it...you really do need to start early if you plan on getting some things finished, because no matter how early you plan it still takes so much time! Huge thanks to Fiona of Celtic Thistle Stitches and Paula of Mud Pies and Pins for including me in this fun Link up party - be sure to stop by and say hi!

Modern Handcraft : Countdown to Christmas Advent Chain

For my project I made something I have had on my list for a long time - an Advent Chain, these are so easy to make and fun for kids to take part in as you count down the days until Santa arrives.

I wanted to make mine out of fabric and use snaps and a sturdy interfacing to make these last a very long time. Join me as we create a fun craft for your Christmas season!

Materials needed: to make a total of 24 chains

  • Therm O Web Heat n Bond Craft Fuse - cut into 2.5" x 9.5" strips
  • 24 fabric pieces cut into 3" x 10" strips
  • Snaps - I used plastic KAM snaps
  • Washable School Glue
  • Glue tip (optional and available here)
  • Sewing Machine and Notions (coordinating thread, rotary cutter and mat, scissors, pins or clips)

Step 1:

  • At your iron, fuse a piece of craft fuse to the wrong side of each fabric strip. Make sure to place in the middle so we can fold over our fabric sides in the next step.

  • Starting with your shorter sides, apply a thin line of glue to the exposed fabric - fold over and iron with a hot dry iron.

  • This will set your glue and keep the fabric in place. Once you have your shorter sides glued down continue to the longer sides and use the same glue - fold - iron steps.

  • Here you can see all four sides glued down . ( I like using this method because sewing this type of craft fuse material wrong side out and trying to turn it right side out is almost impossible. This allows us to have a nice clean edge and not have a raw edge that could fray over time. - Huge thanks to Christy of Christy Creates that has an awesome tutorial using her glue tips)

  • You can now fold your fabric piece in half long ways and iron at the fold.

  • Stitch around the entire fabric piece, back stitching at the beginning and end.

  • Now that you have your chain piece finished you can add your snaps, you will need a complete snap set for each one. I love KAM snaps because they are affordable, and great for kids crafts since they are plastic and there are no sharp pieces.

  • Place each snap about 1/4" to 1/2" from each edge of your chain piece.

  • Complete each step 23 more times and you are finished! I love to make crafts like this assembly line style - all at once for each step. Do what works best for you and have fun!
